Janek Schaefer

Sound Artist, Musician & Composer Janek Schaefer was born in England to Polish and Canadian parents in 1970. While studying architecture at the Royal College of Art [RCA annual prize], he recorded the fragmented noises of a sound activated dictaphone travelling overnight through the Post Office. That work, titled ‘Recorded Delivery’ [1995] was made for the ‘Self Storage’ exhibition [Time Out critics choice] with one time postman Brian Eno and Artangel. Since then the multiple aspects of sound became his focus, resulting in many site-specific installations, exhibition & dance soundtracks, albums and concerts using his self built record players with manipulated found sound collage. The ‘Tri-phonic Turntable’ [1997] is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the ‘World’s Most Versatile Record Player’. He has performed, lectured and exhibited widely throughout Europe [Sonar, Tate Modern, ICA], USA/Canada, [The Walker, XI, Mutek, Princeton], Japan, and Australia [Sydney Opera House]. In 2008 he won the Paul Hamlyn Award for Composers Prize, and The British Composer of the Year Award in Sonic Art. The Bluecoat Gallery exhibited a Retrospective of his 20 year career in 2009. His artwork is represented by Agency Gallery, with the inaugral show "Collecting Connections" in 2013.

The context of each idea is central to its development and resolution. His concerts and installations explore the spatial and architectural aspect that sound can evoke and the twisting of technology. Hybrid analogue and digital techniques are used to manipulate field recordings with live modified vinyl and found sound to create evocative and involving environments. His CD 'Above Buildings' [2000] was released on Fat Cat to considerable praise, [The Guardian CD of the week]. He has collaborations with Philip Jeck (Songs for Europe CD), Robert Hampson  (Comae CD), Stephan Mathieu (Hidden Name CD), and Charlemagne Palestine (Day of the Demons LP). Janek runs his own label [audiOh!Recordings] and web site [audiOh.com] as well as releasing work with Asphodel, Sub Rosa, Hot Air, Sirr, Rhiz, [K-RAA-K]3, Alluvial, DSP, Diskono, BiP_HOp, Cronica, LINE, ::Room40::, Desire Path, Fat Cat, and Staalplaat. Janek was chair of the Sonic Art Jury in the 2013 Birtish Composer Awards. He currently works as a full time artist, musician and composer from the audiOh! Room in Walton-on-Thames.

Mó#

Alexandre Clément, Duarte Lages, Frederico Pêgo, João Martinho,
Luís Kasprzykowski, Mariana Sardon, Miguel Béco, Rita Maia

Mó# is a music box made out of bicycle wheels, loose wires, iron and wood. A recycled piece of scrap, in which the industrial and mechanic remains give the user the chance his own music.

It is a small babel tower where music will be our universal language and will be communicated in a experimental and intuitive way.

MonMazes

Ana Carina Figueiredo, Marco Heleno, Teresa Abreu

MonMazes is a collaborative and physical game inspired by Piet Mondrian paintings that consists of two benches with smart seat cushions that track the user's seating movements. This action applies rotation to virtual mazes based on this author's work, in order to fulfill the goal of the game: guide a sphere until the exit point.

The process of MonMazes development was driven towards an exploration of collaborative possibilities through a physical interface, focusing on the interdependency between players and stimulating social interaction, since they share a common goal.

This project was developed in the context of the 5th edition of the Masters in Digital Art and Technology, University of Minho - Portugal.

POM

Jorge Nuno Coutinho

Pom is an interactive installation inspired by Pong (Atari, Inc. , 1972). The original purpose and rules were maintained - avoid missing the ball for points - but the gameplay has been improved. Pom can be played by up to six players using smartphones!

The volatility of the moving image serves the dynamics of perception.
An image reveals the invisible dimension of time in space.
Does it have the potential to evoke the experience of consciousness in face of the transient?

TWICE TWO MAKES FOUR WITHOUT MY WILL

Good heavens, gentlemen, what sort of free will is left when we come to tabulation and arithmetic, when it will all be a case of twice two make four? Twice two makes four without my will. As if free will meant that!
    – Dostoiévski

Althought being quite quixotic, this piece intends to be an architectural model on determinism, opposing the computer generated particle systems to a physical equivalent, and exploring the restraints and plastic contours of this exchange.
